This past week, our family celebrated something deeply meaningful — not simply an event, but a decision.
When we mentioned we were celebrating Brody at dinner last Sunday, this was the reason why.
This milestone was not scheduled for him.
It was not required.
It was not prompted.
It was something he sought out entirely on his own.
Brody chose to pursue involvement at Renovation Church. He committed to showing up. He built relationships. He found community. And most importantly, he made the intentional decision to grow — spiritually, personally, and socially.
As a parent, there are moments when you guide.
There are moments when you push.
And then there are moments when you step back and watch your child lead.
This was one of those moments.
I was raised Lutheran — baptized, confirmed, deeply rooted in church life during my early years. Like many adults, life moved forward and faith became quieter in my own journey. Because of that, it has been difficult to fully articulate how powerful it has been to witness my teenager choose something that strengthens his character and grounds him in purpose.
Whether someone considers themselves religious, spiritual, questioning, or simply values positive community influence, there is something undeniably impactful about a teenager independently seeking out an environment that encourages growth.
And I’ve seen the difference.
He is lighter.
More grounded.
More intentional.
There is a steadiness in him that wasn’t there before.
One of the most unexpected full-circle moments came when he attended a church camp connected to Renovation Church — the very same camp I attended as a teenager. When he sent photos and described the layout, my own core memories came rushing back. The cabins. The paths. The feeling of belonging.
Life has a way of weaving generations together in ways we don’t anticipate.
And I am incredibly grateful to witness this chapter.
